If you’re using Twitter for your accountancy business, you will be aware of its fast-moving pace, with a tweet’s life span estimated to be around 15 minutes. Whilst the speed and sheer volume of tweets is one reason for Twitter’s popularity, it also means that it can leave you feeling overwhelmed when you first log on to see your timeline. Unless you have hours to spend on monitoring social media, this might mean that relevant content gets lost in and amongst a barrage of irrelevant posts. What is a Twitter list?

According to Twitter, a List is a curated group of Twitter accounts. You can create your own Lists or subscribe to Lists created by others. Viewing a List timeline will show you a stream of Tweets from only the accounts on that List.

In essence, Twitter lists let you organise relevant accounts into groups, according to your own criteria. This helps to streamline and optimise your experience to only show you content that’s relevant and of interest to you, therefore saving you valuable time.

It’s important to point out that lists can be public (visible to anyone and findable via search engines) or private (meaning only you can see them), so do bear this in mind when creating your own lists. You can have a maximum of 1,000 lists per account with up to 5,000 accounts per list.

Ways to use Twitter lists

  1. Keep up to date with thought leaders

Twitter works best when engaging in conversations. By having a list of influencers or thought leaders in your industry that you look up to you can see their content as soon as it’s available – putting you in the best position to engage with them in a timely fashion.

  1. Stay informed about news

Make sure that you find out about industry news as soon as possible so you can either share content relevant to your audience, or participate in industry conversations. Your clients will appreciate you being in the know on industry news or legislative changes.

  1. Monitor the competition

You may want to keep this list private. See what your competitors are up to in one dedicated space, who their followers are and what their Twitter strategy is. This list doesn’t involve any active engagement but should be seen as a research tool, and can be refined by location e.g. Accountants in Surrey.

  1. Content curation

Create a list of partners, publications, suppliers or industry players whose content is relevant to your audience. That way, you have a dedicated area where you can curate third party content.

  1. Networking or events

If you attend a regular networking group or conference, you can create a list of attendees. This will ensure you have the right people to engage with on Twitter. So you can continue conversations, deepen relationships or even start a conversation before meeting in person.

 

Although Twitter lists may take a little bit of work and ongoing refinement up front, the benefits and time saving element certainly outweigh the effort in our opinion, and they are a great way to improve your Twitter experience.
